Meet the Consortium: The University of Patras
The University of Patras, established in the city of Patras in 1964 and commencing operations in the academic year 1966-1967, boasts a rich history of research projects within its Electrical & Computer Engineering department. Notably, the Applied Electronics Laboratory (APEL) and the Patras5G team have been pivotal in driving forward these initiatives. Beyond their involvement in research projects, these teams have spearheaded various initiatives such as the establishment of the P-NET Competency Centre, Sense City, OpenSlice, and more.
What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team?
University of Patras serves as one of the project’s two testbeds, featuring multiple 5G configurations deployed both indoors and outdoors. This infrastructure facilitates the execution of experiments in real network environments, enabling the deployment of application areas 1, 2, and 4 and providing meaningful data for analysis. Furthermore, the University of Patras possesses a central role as the primary maintainer of the OpenSlice project (https://osl.etsi.org/). OpenSlice, an open-source Operation Support System (OSS), offers comprehensive Service Design, Orchestration, and Delivery adhering to widely recognised industry standards. OpenSlice’s significance within the project lies in its function as the resource orchestrator for the INCODE platform.
Why is this project important for your organization?
The INCODE project serves as a platform for the University of Patras to comprehensively evaluate its equipment across a spectrum of verticals, facilitating the gathering of essential data on the behavior of 5G networks in diverse operational scenarios. This comprehensive testing not only deepens our understanding of network dynamics but also yields invaluable insights that can inform and guide the further refinement and evolution of OpenSlice as a versatile and efficient resource orchestrator.
