Leading researchers, decision-makers, and industry professionals gathered in Brussels on May 10–11, 2023, for the much awaited two-day Concertation and Consultation Meeting on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT organized by the European Cloud, Edge and IoT Continuum Initiative. The occasion served as a key forum for discussion and planning regarding the future of research and innovation in the European ICT community.

INCODE presented its mission and objectives alongside over 25 other EU Cloud Edge IoT projects.
Under the strategic guidance of the European Commission’s (EC) DG Connect, the Open Continuum project organized the “Concertation and Consultation Meeting on Computing Continuum” with the assistance of Unlock CEI and SWForum.

INCODE’s Project Coordinators John Avramidis and Lina Giannakandropoulou presented the project alongside over 25 initiatives working on the future of cloud edge IoT technologies.

The event offered the opportunity to receive the latest updates on trends, innovations, and technologies in the computing continuum. The keynote speeches and the open discussion sessions featured top of the line researchers, industry experts, policy makers, and practitioners who shared their experiences, challenges, and success stories and provided valuable insights into how IoT, edge computing, and cloud technologies are being implemented across various sectors. The meeting offered a space to collaborate and bring to life collaborations and partnerships with professionals and researchers from different backgrounds and organizations as well as sister projects within the continuum ecosystem.

The main highlights that emerged around the future of computing continuum were:

  • Distributed Intelligence will be a key ingredient of the computing continuum future. Instead of relying solely on centralized cloud infrastructure, intelligent decision-making capabilities will be distributed across edge devices and cloud resources. This approach is expected to offer faster response times, improved autonomy, and significantly enhanced scalability.
  • Computing continuum technologies will witness an increased integration of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. AI algorithms will be deployed at the edge to enable real-time decision-making, predictive analytics, orchestration, and intelligent automation. On the other hand, cloud resources will support training models, data storage, and more complex AI computations.
  • As the computing continuum becomes more interconnected, ensuring robust security and privacy measures will be a top priority. Protecting data at each layer, implementing encryption, secure protocols, and identity management will be crucial to maintain trust and address potential vulnerabilities.

The INCODE project is working hard to cover all these mentioned points.

Overall, the event offered a great opportunity to connect with other research projects and enrich the INCODE experience by facilitating knowledge sharing, building collaboration opportunities, getting feedback, and opening the team to different perspectives.

At INCODE we look forward to connecting and working with fellow projects under the umbrella of the several Task Forces of the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu
